Repression in Oaxaca that recalls Salvador
Having just read John Dear's comments on the 4 church women and remembering when it happened (I was in Portland, Oregon) and remembering the 25th anniversary my husband and I attended last year in Salvador, I feel the need to speak about what is happening now in Oaxaca. Deirdre Cornell who is also here has written 3 articles in NCR giving the background on the conflict here. Briefly, the constant oppresson of 80% of people in Oaxaca state gave rise to a peaceful, non violent protest that has been met with a repression...deaths, disappearances and illegal jailings complete with torture and rape that is a repeat of Salvador, Guatemala, Chile, Argentina etc. etc., the pattern of the powers never changes.
Oaxaca is a mirror of all Mexico since the stealing of the last national election. I believe all events happen just when they are meant to and that through, and in spite of whatever actors at the time God is present in our history. My husband and I are definitely in the line of liberation theology and although we have no Romero, the people are acting the role of prophet in this new time. At their recent congrss, the Indigenous Peoples of Oaxaca said, "We move slowly because the road is long." Now with human rights workers jailed and threatened, the struggle goes on less publicly but lives because people of all classes have joined it. They are incredibly brave. There are lots more details, but I just want to ask for prayers and support for our people. Una de las Paraquitas Oaxaqueñas
