Showdown at the OK-Corral

Some few days before November 4 I received an e-mail that originated from the Supreme Office of the Knights of Columbus. It asked for my vote to preserve the progress bishops made toward reversing "Roe vs. Wade".

I voted for Senator Obama and replied with a "Cautionary Notice":

"I write as an observant and affected Catholic and Knight of Columbus. I too, like others perhaps, am not a little unsettled by "religious" overstepping in the political arena for narrowly focused interests. America is and will remain religiously "plural".

"I am not a lawyer but I recognize potential legal consequences that implicate me vis-a-vis the overt religious/ political venture of bishops and the leadership of the Knights of Columbus, to specifically affect the outcome of the election (for a republican president) for the stated objective of influencing the appointment of Supreme Court Justices who would likely reverse Roe vs. Wade.

"My religious trust and personal insurance interests are put at legal risk by collusive religious/ political meddling. But more importantly, the credibility of Church, of Christion religion, is seriously degraded by this distrustful behavior. I trust that this unseemly matter will now receive the serious and responsive attention it deserves at official levels. Change is needed. Sylvester L. Steffen

It is time for the bishops and the Knights of Columbus to get on the "right side" of history and get beyond their Middle Age mentality toward women. The laity have their own ideas as to what is OK.

Sylvester, I've watched the K of C turn themselves into a Republican PAC with a great deal of sadness. I've often wondered if the rank and file actually support the machinations of their leadership. I know individual members who were sickened by the K of C jumping into bed with the LDS church in California. Partnering with institiutional polygamists to take away somebody elses marriage rights in the name of the 'always was truth of one man/one woman marriage' seemed highly hypocritical.

Glad you wrote your letter.
