The National Catholic Reporter, an independent non-profit organization, relies on the financial support of individuals like you to help us fulfill our mission of seeking to inform and inspire a just and peaceful world, serving as a platform for discussions of church, society and global community. Although we stretch every dollar we receive from our subscription and advertising incomes as far as we can, these monies do not fully sustain the electronic and print forums for the Catholic conversation that we provide. That's why we established the Friends of NCR fundraising program. These additional resources that you offer help us cover the news, write the stories and maintain the electronic media that give you access to accurate information and stimulating conversation. As an independent Catholic organization, NCR is in a unique position to provide you with open, honest coverage of the important challenges within our Church and wider world as well as a place in cyberspace to discuss these issues. We have always protected our freedom to publish our newspaper and to dialogue on the issues without secular or Church censorship or sponsorship. We understand the need and responsibility to report our stories in a manner that involves thorough, extensive research, accurate documentation, and well-written articles. We also take very seriously our responsibility to invite all to the table for respectful and open dialogue, which we can now do in new ways through the Internet. Freedom of the press — in both print and electronic media — and the role it plays in building a better world and a better church must never be taken for granted.
