The problem with "hate-crimes" law... well, one of them

One major problem with hate crimes laws is the inevitable erosion of free speech rights. In Canada several operators of blogs and forums are being sued by Richard Warman for libel, because they reposted, linked to, alluded to, or commented on information that he was guilty of entrapment in cases he was bringing before the Human Rights Commission.

The suit brought against Kathy Shaidle, Ezra Levant, Kate McMillan and FreeDominion.ca has already shut down another site, an aggregator that had links to some of the named posts. Facing a $30,000 fight to save a $50,000 fine if they are named, Saskblogs Aggregator folded.

Pope Benedict's Visit

Pope Benedict: Christ our Hope

Pope Benedict, hot off the World Apostolic Congress on Mercy, will be looking for signs of hope in America. The naming of this historic apostolic visit “Christ our Hope” has great providential meaning for us. Will the pontiff truly find signs of Christ our hope, in America? Will he be able to see anything tangible that will stay in his memory forever?

Papal documents usually have profound insights for us, not only for the times that they are written, but as a teaching tool that lasts for centuries and sometimes into millenniums. In his encyclical letter Saved by Hope (Spe Salvi) Pope Benedict XVI elaborates on the hope for eternal life and he reminds us that hope ultimately depends on our trusting in God's love for us, for without trust there can be no true hope, nor true peace for mankind.
