The Vision Thing

In his recent column at the Chicago Sun-Times, suntimes.com, Fr. Andrew Greeley places the experience factor beneath vision and character in the search for a Presidential Candidate. Experience has brought us failures from the Watergate/ Viet Nam Era and their lousy attitudes, today. John Kennedy and his superior instincts saved us alot of grief in the Cuban Missile Crisis. If the crowd we have now was confronted in the same way much of what is, ironically, a source of their staunchest support in the South would still be glowing in the dark.

Ratzinger's 1990 remarks on Galileo

Note: Recently a group of professors and students from Rome's La Sapienza University, including the entire physics faculty, wrote a letter protesting Pope Benedict XVI's scheduled Jan. 17 lecture to open the academic year. They cited comments from then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger in 1990 on the Galileo case. Those comments are presented here.

“The Crisis of Faith in Scienceâ€

The pope, modern science, and a canary in the coal mine

Normally speaking, a visit by a pope to a Roman university to launch the academic year would not be a particularly scintillating news story. Benedict XVI’s appearance at Rome’s La Sapienza this coming Thursday, however, is likely to draw above-average attention, in the wake of a letter from 63 professors and students, including the entire physics faculty, demanding that the invitation be withdrawn. Some student groups have also threatened a sit-in.
